Psychology – the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behaviour in a given context.
Whenever we think about psychology, all we think about is the human mind and how it behaves, and this is one of the reasons why most of the us tend to assume that talking to a psychologist or a therapist may just not help in our issues and that it is hokum. But what we fail to understand is that when a psychologist evaluates a person, he does a lot more than analyze the human mind. After studying the human behaviour scientifically, he has the know-how of using various techniques that have been devised over the years by various psychologist and have a quantitative proof about how they work. These tests are designed in such a way that it makes us subconsciously choose something that more often the not defines our dominant and recessive behavioural traits in ways we cannot understand.
Dr. Robert Cialdini, one of the most renowned psychoanalysts in the world, a professor at ASU and a published author has spoken about a simple experiment that was undertaken and how it affects the people who were a part of it. The experiment begins by diving the entire group into 3 smaller groups. And each group is shown a different image. The first group is shown an image of a person standing alone with his head bowed down. The other 2 groups are shown an image of two people standing at close proximity and having a laugh, like they are friends. And after a while, the person in-charge of the individual group drops his papers. And the result was that the participants in the 2 groups who were shown an image showing camaraderie were more willing to get up and help the person in-charge. The astonishing fact was that this experiment was conducted on children who were just 18 months old!
What this tells us is that what we see does leave an impression in our subconscious and that makes us behave in a particular way. World renowned psychologist Pip Wilson devised and undertook a series of tests to try and determine the dominant traits of three-year-olds, but over the course of time, it has been proven to be accurate even for adults. We are going to take a look at his experiment and the conclusions drawn from it in detail.
The experiment beings with a picture of a tree and 21 human-like figures all around the tree in various positions, numbered from 1 to 21. All the participants need to do is take a look at the picture, think for a moment and choose the picture they think relates the most to them.
And the results were astonishing. The conclusions were drawn in the following way:
Selected option 1, 3, 6 or 7
Figures numbered as above are the ones who are in the process of climbing the tree. This indicates that these participants are fighters. That they would not back down from obstacles and face any problems in front of them head on. It indicates the presence of courage in times of crisis and willingness to push through. It also means that these people are goal oriented and are ready to put in the hard work to achieve those goals. It indirectly indicates that the person is leveled and would not need psychological help in the current emotional state.
Selected option 2, 11, 12, 18 or 19
Figures numbered as above are the ones who are either helping someone out or are sitting with their peers. This shows that these participants are not only social, but above all have a big heart and are willing to help other around them in need. They are kind, loyal and when in a fix themselves, they do not hesitate to ask for help from others. More often than not they are really good at giving advice, and this makes them respected among peers. They know the spirit of team work and can be really good leaders. Like the previous group, people from this group are strong minded too and do not need any psychological help.
Selected option 4
Number 4 shows the figure standing near the tree trunk with a smile on the face. This is the sign of a person who is content, at ease with himself and at peace. This in no way means that such people do not look for success, but they are so at peace that they do not bother spending too much time trying to strive for it. The most important thing for such people is to live life to the fullest, like it’s the last day. They do not suffer from anxiety or depression or have other issues. They are usually always happy, because their happiness does not depend on anyone or anything.
Selected option 5
Number 5 shows the figure lying down on his stomach, looking a little dejected. Lying down here does not indicate laziness, but that these people are usually over worked. They tend to think that they do not have energy or willingness to change the situation and get out of the rut. It also indicates that these people have not always been dejected, but are simply going through a tough time. It would help them to take a moment to figure out that things need changing, find motivation and get out of the usual. This would help them to not fall into depression and keep them active.
Selected option 8
Number 8 shows the figure sitting on a branch of the tree, with his back facing towards the participants and head hanging low. These people are usually isolated, and choose to stay that way. They tend to value their personal time so much that they do not bother sharing anything with anyone around them, friends or peers. This in turn affects their work as well because all they need is themselves and as less social contact as humanly possible. Being in this emotional state for too long can result in many psychological illnesses. It is imperative that try and meet new people. And in due time, they will realize that interaction can be fun too.
Selected option 9
Number 9 shows the figure swinging from a branch. One word that can be used to describe them is fun. These people do not know how to be upset. They’re always cheerful and spreading cheer everywhere they go. They love adventure and challenges that would test them. They are open to new ideas and interactions. They’re really valued in their circle and most of the time are oblivious to it. The only thing they should do is also value themselves, because more often than not, they’re spreading smiles.
Selected option 10 or 15
Figures numbered as above are perched somewhere in the middle of the tree, not too bothered by what is going on around them. They can usually adapt to situations around them. They also possess the ability to mould the environment around them in such a way that it is comfortable for them and others around them. They are usually ice breakers and live for everyday surprises. They do not need a lot to be happy and are very headstrong.
Selected option 13 or 21
Figures numbered as above are similar to option 8, the difference being they are facing towards the participants and sitting on branches with their arms folded looking withdrawn. These people are not socially awkward, but are unwilling to communicate with others. This results in them going through long periods of isolation and depression. These the are people who really need psychological help to get past their problems and reach happiness and satisfaction which they need. They cannot help themselves and that is why visiting a therapist will help them in ways they do not know exist.
Selected option 14
Number 14 is a figure falling from the tree. This indicates that the person does tend to feel helpless and that they are in the process of falling down even further. These people are a threat to themselves because of going through a prolonged period of isolation. They do catch the eye of peers and friends because they’re on their way down, and what would help them would be to confide in their friends and talk their problems out. Getting psychological help would be another option. They should not let this pass thinking it would improve or they just might end up worse off than they already are.
Selected option 16 or 17
Figures numbered as above are a pair and are a clear definition of how opposites attract. Number 17 is a figure that is being cared for and supported by number 16. And although it is clear that 17 is more dependent on 16, figure 16 does want to be there and care for 17. This makes them in indispensable couple. Both of them would be benefited by showing mutual appreciation and assurance so that neither of them feels above or below the other. It is a smooth balance between giving and receiving and this makes them comfortable with other and results in mutual benefit.
Selected option 20
Number 20 is standing at the top of the tree with his arms folded at his waist. Being perched on the top shows that they’re the best version of themselves that they can be. By the virtue of their personal efforts, they have reached their emotional and social goal and are an inspiration for others around them. It makes them a natural leader. The only thing they need to do now would be to take advantage of their situation, show others the way forward and this would make them feel even better and satisfied that they could make a difference in the lives of others around.
After going through this test and getting to know oneself better, it would be prudent to read about all the other options that you did not choose and send the test to your friends and peers so that they could better understand and evaluate themselves and take the necessary steps to make it better for themselves. This in turn will help you know your friends and peers better and create an overall positive impact in your life and theirs alike.
